As we all know, cartridges are typically sold in standard cartridge and high yield cartridge, of course, they also have extra high yield cartridge. Different brands name their cartridge in different rules. Today, let's see how they are named.

 

How do HP name their ink cartridge?

HP ink cartridges usually come in two sizes: standard yield and high yield. But it also has exceptions, like HP 902, which comes in three sizes: standard, high yield and extra high yield. Printers using HP 902 cartridges can use any of these sizes. Generally speaking, HP ink cartridges usually only come in standard yield and high yield that with the high yield version having “XL” at the end of the cartridge number.

Standard Yield: HP 902 ink cartridge, which print 300 pages.

High Yield: HP 902XL ink cartridge, which print 825 pages.

Extra High Yield: HP 906XL ink cartridge, which print 1500 pages.

 

How do HP name their toner cartridge?

The name of HP toner cartridge is different from that of HP Ink Cartridge. HP standard toner cartridges are marked with "A" at the end of the toner cartridge number, while high yield versions are named with "X" at the end of the toner cartridge number, moreover many extra high yield toner cartridges have "Y" at the end of the cartridge number. Here are some examples:

There are no uniform rules for the naming of Brother ink cartridges. Others use slightly different part numbers to differentiate the cartridge sizes, Let’s take the Brother LC3011 ink cartridge an example:

Canon follows the same naming rules as HP ink cartridge, where XL stands for high yield ink cartridge and XXL stands for extra high yield ink cartridge.

Standard Yield: Canon PGI-250 ink cartridge, prints 300 pages.

High Yield: Canon PGI-250XL ink cartridge, prints 500 Pages.

Extra High Yield: Canon PGI-255XXL ink cartridge, prints 800 pages.

 

How do Canon name their toner cartridge?

Most of Canon's toner cartridges don't have a higher print yield option, but there are still a few high yield toner cartridges. They usually add "H" to the end of the cartridge’s name to represent high yield.

Standard Yield: Canon 040 Black toner cartridge, which print 6300 pages.

High Yield: Canon 040H Black toner cartridge, which print 12500 pages.

 

How do Epson name their ink cartridge?

The naming rule of Epson ink cartridges are similar to the HP ink cartridge, which usually add “XL” to the end of the cartridge represent the high yield version. The following is an example of how Epson names its standard and high yield ink cartridges.
