How much Toner do We Need to Print per Page in a Laser Printer?

When we use toner cartridge for our laser printer, we always think about how much toner do we need when printing a page? How long can a toner cartridge last? Since the price of toner cartridges is very expensive, we have to keep an eye on our printing volume to control our cost.

So, today, I would like to share my opinion about how much toner do we need to print per page in a laser printer. I hope this article will help you more better understand your toner cartridge and your laser printer.

What is the important index for calculating toner cartridge printing quantity?

The first factor is page yield.

What is page yield?

Page yield is the total number of pages that can be printed with a print cartridge. Until now, printer manufacturers have used a variety of methodologies to measure cartridge yields, making it challenging for you to accurately compare brands. That's why Lexmark, along with other printer manufacturers worked in conjunction with the ISO to create new standards for measuring page yield. On December 13, 2006, the ISO approved the new standard for inkjet (ISO)/IEC 24711) and color toner (ISO/IEC 19798) printer cartridge page yield measurements. These new standards compliment the ISO/IEC 19752 yield standard for monochrome toner cartridges published in June 2004.

The second factor is the 5% page coverage.

We always see the 5% page coverage on the products when we purchase toner cartridge. What does it actual means?

This is an industry standard measurement that was introduced and enforced by the Office of Fair Trading and ISO (the International Organisation for Standardisation) because there needed to be a way to help customers to understand what they were paying for.

So what does 5% page coverage look like?

So now do you know what the 5% page coverage means?

If you have entirely understand the above two major factors, now let’s give an example.

If you want to purchase a CF380X toner cartridge, it will display that the page yield of the Hp CF380X toner cartridge is 4,400 pages 5% coverage per cartridge.

It means a CF380X toner cartridge can print 4,400 pages if you printing as 5% coverage per A4/letter. But if you print more than 5% coverage per A4/letter, it will print less than 4,400 page and if you print less than 5% coverage per A4/Letter, you may print more than 4,400.

So the page yield is not changeless which just depend on your actual printing coverage.

So, if you want to calculate the toner needed for printing each page, you can just follow up the above factors. If you printing a 5% page coverage in a paper, you can calculate that you have used 1/4400 of your toner cartridge, so you still have 4399 pages 5% coverage A4/Letter can print.
